Paris Monuments  Place de la Concorde

Photo of the famous 3200 year old Luxor obelisk taken at the Place de la Concore in Paris.

Louis-Philippe decided to put up a non political monument at the place de la Concorde. It became one of the two Obelisks that the viceroy of Egypt (Mehemet Ali) presented to France in 1831. On 25 October 1836 the obelisk in pink granite (23 meters and 230 ton) from the entrance of Raeses II's (now Luxor) was set in the middle of the square. The base of the obelisk tells the epic story of the obelisk's travel from Egypt to France and was designed by the same person who was responsible for renovating the square (J. Hittorff).
