Description
Opéra Garnier
One of the most impressive monuments of Paris built during the second empire. After the opening of the Opera Bastille known as Opera Garnier.
The building was designed in 1860 by Charles Garnier, while the construction started in 1862. It took nearly 13 years to complete due to several interruptions during the Prussian war and the uprising of 1871.
Owing to the fact that in 1858 Orsini had attempted to assassinate the emperor outside the old opera house. Garnier decided to include a pavilion on the east side of the new building so the sovereign could safely reach the suite of rooms adjoining the royal box, when he arrived with his carriage.
The huge entrance hall accessible, with its Great Staircase, is decorated with multicolored marble and a gigantic chandelier. The building undergoes several repairs, just now (September-2000) the beautiful front facade is finished.
